haven of hope came into existence.
Learn about the groundbreaking events that paved the way for development.
SGYC works in communities in partnership with local churches and agencies to impact the lives of youth and children in desperate situations.
Spicy Grove Youth Center in Oracabessa St. Mary, an outreach of Warm Whispers Ministries, was established in March 2011 as a non-profit organization. Founder and President, Rev. Harry D. Myers And his wife Grace are committed to the upliftment and transformation of the youth and children in Jamaica. To get here, the journey was plagued with many trials and challenges, yet many triumphs.
In his time God brought many persons to provide support and help to shape the vision.
In April of 2015, the joining together in the marriage of Danny Myers and Grace Taylor forged a partnership which took the ministry to a new dimension as Grace brought to the table her skills and experience in the church work, leadership and administration in the areas of Education, Counseling and children’s ministry.
Harry Daniel Myers
In March 2011 Harry Daniel Myers, affectionately called Pastor Danny or Rev. left the comforts of his homeland and the company of family and friends to establish roots in Spicy Grove, Oracabessa. This was the culmination of over 10 years of summer mission trips to Jamaica leading teams from churches in the USA. He surrendered to God’s call and by faith purchased a property with dilapidated buildings that was
previously a copra (coconut) factory. He came with his heart set on a mission: “To bring Hope and the love of Christ to the youth and Children of Jamaica.
On arrival, excited and rearing to go, Pastor Danny thought he had all the answers and that there was an easy fix to the myriad of problems and issues in this beautiful little island. But was soon to discover that Jamaica has a complex culture and many challenges not easily understood nor overcome. He had to abandon his dream of having a Children’s Home for a few disadvantaged children and focus instead on the needs of the many children in Oracabessa and the surrounding communities.
A Jewel on the north coast
HOPE Center will create more opportunities and cause the impact on lives and the community to explode. The homework and community access point with over 20 computers, a counseling and mediation center, classrooms for literacy and skills training programmes, meeting spaces to facilitate workshops, seminars and conferences are destined to contribute significantly to the life of Oracabessa an area with such pristine beauty, a jewel on the north coast with untapped potential. The growth and changes in the mindset of the people through exposure and education is bound to have a spiral effect…this HOPE Center will Help People to Excel!!
Transformed and Reshaped
As the years went by the vision was transformed, reformed and reshaped. The Child Sponsorship program became the focus of the ministry as children were given the support they needed to stay in school and make the best use of the opportunity to receive a good education. We now have a Breakfast Program that aims to meet the nutritional needs of our children. The ministry to youth, some of whom who were school drop outs, began to create a real impact and changed the trajectory of many young men, who were sitting on the roadside without hope – Oshane is here to share his story…..(Call Oshane to come and share). Our youth ministry now includes a Saturday evening session called “Engage” held right here in the HOPE Center.
In May of 2016, an initiative was birthed by Community Development Specialist, Educator and Philanthropist, Lorna Archer Stanley O.D J.P. which became the Strong Women of Spicy Grove. This was designed to inspire, equip and empower women. After two years they can boast many achievements in the lives of individuals who have grown and developed socially, educationally, spiritually, acquired new skills and undertaken entrepreneurial ventures. There are plans to further assist these women on their journey to independence and empowerment. The men are not forgotten as recently in March of this year we partnered with the Optimist Club of Golden Head and Cameron Enterprises to host a very successful Men’s conference: Calling A Few Good Men.
